Bar Natale opens in Amantea: an authentic, deeply local place, run by someone who knew the sea from the inside — he was a fisherman long before he was a restaurateur. Whatever the sea gave us ended up in the kitchen. There was no distance between the catch and the plate. Everything was already there, in that simplicity.
In the nineties, something shifts. The second generation takes up the flame and carries it forward. In 1998 Locanda di Mare opens on Via Stromboli, in the heart of Amantea. It isn't just a new restaurant: it's a life choice, a declaration of love for a cuisine that tells the story of its land.
Fish — fresh, local, honest — becomes the absolute protagonist. Dishes without fuss, built on the quality of the raw ingredients and respect for a tradition rooted in centuries of fishing in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
For twenty-four years, Locanda di Mare is a landmark for those who live in Amantea and those just passing through. Loyal regulars who return summer after summer, bringing friends and family — remembering flavours the way you remember people.
In 2024, the story doesn't end. It transforms. The second generation, with the third already at their side, takes a bold step: moving into the old town, inside the walls of a historic nineteenth-century palazzo. This is how L'800 — Locanda a Palazzo is born.
The name is a tribute to the building that welcomes us, but also to the belief that beautiful things require time, roots, memory. The kitchen stays true to itself: fresh fish, authentic Calabrian flavours, and a creativity that never betrays tradition.
In spring and summer, the garden becomes the natural extension of the table — a moment of green and silence in the beating heart of Amantea.
More than fifty years separate us from that first restaurant. Two names, one soul: the sea, Calabria, the table as a place of meeting.
